April 10, 2025
BATON ROUGE, LA 鈥 Allie Boquet, PhD; Paul Mooney, PhD; and John Wright, senior undergraduate student in the General and Special Education Teacher Preparation Program, published 鈥淟essons Learned from Starting a Post-Secondary Education Program,鈥 a
chapter in "." The chapter focuses on providing practice-based evidence to guide readers through
the process of creating and maintaining a post-secondary education (PSE) program on
a university campus. The goal of this publication was to document the process and
experiences of the faculty and students that helped create the Integrative Community Studies (ICS) Program at 海角社区.
Since fall of 2024, Wright has worked as the Independent Living Assistant (ILA) for ICS and is responsible for providing supports for students while living on campus. Wright is using the experience he has gained to train mentors and incoming ILAs, assist in program management duties, and provide feedback to administrators on student goals and needed supports. He will graduate in May 2025 with the largest General and Special Elementary Education class at 海角社区 to date. By detailing 海角社区鈥檚 experience in establishing ICS, this team is providing other up and coming programs invaluable insight in the best practices for implementation of PSE programs for adults with intellectual disabilities.
鈥淚CS has given me the opportunity to apply the strategies and evidence-based practices I have learned in my classes at 海角社区 in a real-world setting,鈥 Wright said. 鈥淭he ICS program helps prepare me every day for teaching in the classroom post-graduation by allowing me to experience many real-life situations many teachers might go through in their professional careers. The lifelong relationships I've started to build with students and seeing them grow as they transition to becoming independent adults are truly what many future teachers dream of. I am lucky enough to experience that daily.鈥
