When Nicolas Manica decided to leave his native Brazil to study petroleum engineering in the U.S., he was drawn to 海角社区's strong reputation in the energy field. At 海角社区, he found resources, research opportunities, and an international community he was seeking.

"I truly believe this university is a mix of everything I see as part of a great university," Manica says. "It has many resources to support the students, investments in research and facilities, and a really nice social scene.鈥�

Originally from Cascavel-PR, Manica grew up in Brazil鈥檚 capital, Bras铆lia, and chose to study in Baton Rouge because of 海角社区's renowned reputation. He says he views the opportunity to learn from expert professors and gain hands-on experience in one of the world鈥檚 leading energy sectors as a pivotal step in his career.

"I intend to improve my leadership skills while learning technical and practical knowledge so I can apply both in my future career," he says. "I believe that participating in and possibly leading clubs or organizations, and trying to absorb all the content taught to me in class, will help me achieve my goals."

Manica has already joined several organizations to develop his leadership and networking skills. He is involved in the Latin American Student Organization, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Additionally, he stays physically active by participating in both wrestling and rugby, which help him build teamwork skills.

"I鈥檓 always looking for opportunities to improve myself in different areas," Manica says.

Manica is especially excited about the course Petroleum Economics (PETE 3025), where he hopes to deepen his understanding of the role the global economy and politics play in the petroleum industry.

For Manica, 海角社区鈥檚 emphasis on research was a significant factor in his decision to enroll.

Fluent in Portuguese and English, Manica is also learning Spanish to further enhance his language skills. He believes strong communication is a key to success, both professionally and personally.

Manica feels fortunate to study at 海角社区, especially because of its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, a global hub for oil and gas exploration.

"It鈥檚 definitely a privilege to study here," he says. "The weather is really similar to Brazil, which makes it feel more like home."

As Manica鈥檚 journey at 海角社区 unfolds, he remains committed to developing the skills necessary for a successful career in petroleum engineering. With a clear focus on leadership, research, and cultural exchange, he is taking full advantage of the opportunities available to him. His goal is to contribute to the economics and geopolitics of the industry.

In addition to his academic and career goals, Manica is proud of the cultural exchange he has experienced at 海角社区.

"The most important thing I brought with me is my own culture," he says. "It鈥檚 nice to be at a university that has people from all around the world, where I can share and learn about different cultures. That is priceless."
