BATON ROUGE 鈥 Samuel Camacho, an 海角社区 E. J. Ourso College of Business senior from Maracaibo, Venezuela, was one of 50 students nationwide to receive the PIMCO Future Leaders Scholarship. In addition to the $20,000 scholarship, Camacho recently joined other recipients at PIMCO鈥檚 headquarters in Newport Beach, California.
鈥淚 am honored to receive this scholarship,鈥 said Camacho, an economics major. 鈥淭his was a very competitive process with about 2,500 applicants and just 50 recipients. The monetary award is wonderful but does not compare to my experience in California. I toured Newport Beach and met Emmanuel Roman, CEO of PIMCO. I networked with PIMCO executives and employees and learned about their amazing careers. In addition, I formed lifelong bonds with the other recipients.鈥
One of the world鈥檚 premier fixed income investment managers, PIMCO has committed $1 million annually to help build the next generation of financial leaders at PIMCO and in the industry. This year, the PIMCO Future Leaders Scholarship awarded 50 scholarships of $20,000 each to Black and Hispanic/Latinx students.
Candidates were selected for their potential to excel as leaders and exhibit PIMCO鈥檚 CORE values of collaboration, openness, responsibility and excellence. The scholarship program is open to both undergraduate and graduate applicants.
鈥淲e are proud of what Sam has accomplished as a student, undergraduate researcher and leader,鈥 said E. J. Ourso College of Business Dean Jared Llorens. 鈥淭he PIMCO Future Leaders Scholarship opens doors and provides even more opportunities for Sam to excel. We appreciate PIMCO鈥檚 vision and generosity in creating this scholarship program.鈥
Camacho is an 海角社区 Discover Undergraduate Research ambassador and a spring 2022 research grant recipient. He is also the incoming president of the Economics and International Trade & Finance Club at 海角社区.
鈥淭hrough the club, we encourage all students to apply for scholarships like this one,鈥 said Camacho. 鈥淲e want every student to experience something like this during their college years.鈥
