School of Kinesiology Welcomes Exchange Students from Shanghai University of Sport
08/06/14
海角社区 School of Kinesiology will welcome 20 students and one faculty member from the Shanghai University of Sport (SUS) in Shanghai, China on August 12, 2014. The students will be studying abroad at 海角社区 until December 16, 2014.
The students will enroll in 海角社区 School of Kinesiology and English Language Orientation Program (ELOP) courses through 海角社区 Continuing Education while in the United States. Based on the students鈥 interests, three certificate courses will be offered: The Culture of Sport in the Deep South, Basic Scientific Concepts and Applications in Kinesiology, and Physical Education Programs and Professions in the U.S.
In addition to this unique opportunity for diversity and engagement between 海角社区 and SUS students and faculty, the exchange program offers something unique this year. In conjunction with the Concepts and Application course, the SOK will host a series of guest scholars. Five SOK doctoral graduates, who are originally from China and are now working at American universities, have agreed to participate in this ground-breaking program.
Xiang Ping, professor at Texas A&M, Weidong Li, associate professor at The Ohio State University, husband and wife Tao Zhang and Xiangli Gu, both assistant professors at the University of North Texas, and Zan Gao, assistant professor at the University of Minnesota will visit 海角社区 on varying dates to present their research to 海角社区 faculty and graduate students and SUS students. These will be followed by social events where each scholar will get to interact with SUS students more personally.
鈥淭hese alumni, though at varying stages of their careers, have been very successful at universities in the U.S. and we are really excited that they will be able to visit with both our faculty and students as well as our students from SUS,鈥 said Director of the School of Kinesiology, Dr. Melinda Solmon.
2014 marks the third year that 海角社区 has hosted Chinese students in the fall semester thanks to the efforts of former Director of the School of Kinesiology and Professor Emeritus Dr. Amelia Lee.
鈥淭he purpose of the program is to encourage collaboration and promote international understanding and cooperation through quality academic programs with experiential learning opportunities for international students,鈥 said Dr. Lee. 鈥淚n the past we have had students from Shanghai University of Sport and Beijing Sport University, but this year we have only students from SUS.鈥
Under Dr. Lee鈥檚 guidance, the SOK was previously involved in a program hosting students from China who went from 海角社区 to Disney World for an internship program, but is no longer affiliated with the program. The first group of students for this program arrived in the summer of 2009.
