海角社区 Physics Professor Named Visiting Professor of Chinese Academy of Sciences
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 28, 2018
BATON ROUGE 鈥摵=巧缜 Professor Jonathan P. Dowling has been appointed to a three-year term as Distinguished Visiting Professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Dowling is the Horace C. Hearne Professor of Theoretical Physics and founding Co-Director of the Horace C. Hearne Institute for Theoretical Physics in the 海角社区 College of Science. The Institute carries out research on quantization of gravity, quantum optics effects in gravitational wave interferometers, decoherence due to quantum gravity, non-standard optics due to quantum gravity, quantum computing, quantum imaging, and quantum sensing.
鈥淚t is a great honor to be associated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and I
look forward to future collaborations between 海角社区 and Chinese universities in the
areas of quantum technologies,鈥 said Dowling.
Since 2016, Dowling has served as visiting professor at New York University of Shanghai and the University of Science and Technology, Shanghai, with which we have a program that allows for exchange of students and senior personnel with 海角社区.
Dowling鈥檚 principal areas of research are in quantum science and technologies, particularly in quantum computing and quantum information technologies, quantum optics, foundations of quantum mechanics, and photonics. He is actively working in the areas of optical quantum computing and information processing, cavity quantum electrodynamics, photonic band-gap structures, quantum coherence, atom optics, quantum imaging, and quantum sensors. His recent topics of research are related to quantum technologies, including linear optical quantum information processing, quantum lithography and imaging, quantum gravity gradiometry, and quantum interferometry and metrology.
He received his BS with honors in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1977. From the University of Colorado at Boulder he conferred his MS in Applied Mathematics in1981, a MS in1984, and a PhD in Mathematical Physics in 1988.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences is the linchpin of China鈥檚 drive to explore and harness high technology and the natural sciences for the benefit of China and the world. Comprising a comprehensive research and development network, a merit-based learned society and a system of higher education, CAS brings together scientists and engineers from China and around the world to address both theoretical and applied problems using world-class scientific and management approaches.
