Derek Berning assists with the Center鈥檚 long- and short-term projects on the energy economy of
the Gulf Coast, including the annual Gulf Coast Energy Outlook and an infrastructure
tracking database. He is responsible for collecting, cleaning, and visualizing energy
data in Stata, using both established and novel sources. Additionally, Derek helps
update the Center鈥檚 papers and publications prior to presentation to its diverse audiences
and gathers information for stakeholders upon request.
Derek began working at the Center in May 2023, shortly after having earned a B.A.
from the University of Portland with a major in economics and a minor in political
science. His undergraduate capstone focused on the effects of the temporarily expanded
pandemic-era child tax credit.
