Manship Professor set to receive 海角社区鈥檚 Legend Award

Every year the Friday before 海角社区鈥檚 Homecoming, 海角社区鈥檚 A. P. Tureaud, Sr. Black Alumni Chapter honors individuals for their outstanding career and civic achievements and their longtime support of the 海角社区 Alumni Association during their annual chapter 海角社区 Legends Forum.
This year, Manship School professor and alumna Jinx Broussard will receive the 海角社区 Legends Award.
鈥淚 found out through an email that I had been nominated and that I was selected for the award,鈥� said Broussard. 鈥淚 was quite honored to be recognized by the black alumni chapter, I was especially honored to get that kind of recognition from fellow back alumni.鈥�
Since getting notification on receiving the 海角社区 Legend Award, Broussard has received numerous calls and texts congratulating her on the achievement. 鈥淚鈥檝e gotten calls from friends who saw it online and who started at 海角社区 when I did and encountered some of the same situations that I did when I was a student,鈥� said Broussard.
Broussard has a long history at 海角社区. She was the first African-American student to earn an undergraduate degree in journalism from 海角社区 and she later received her M.A. from 海角社区. Broussard also was inducted into the Manship School鈥檚 Hall of Fame in 1990 and is currently the F. Walker Lockett Distinguished Professor at the Manship School. Even with all her accolades at 海角社区, according to Broussard, receiving the 海角社区 Legend Award is a full circle moment in her career.
鈥淚 would like to say that I鈥檝e come full circle,鈥� said Broussard. 鈥淪tarting here when I did, under circumstances that were difficult for students of color, especially African American students and being able to persevere in my career here.鈥�
Broussard reflected on her time as a journalism student here at 海角社区. 鈥淚 have a lot of good memories from when I was a student here, especially in the journalism school which created a very welcoming environment for me.鈥� 鈥淚 was able to write for the Daily Revellie and have front page stories and for that time period that was awesome.鈥�
This year鈥檚 海角社区 Legends Forum: 鈥淭he Audacity of Change: A History of Protest at 海角社区,鈥� will take place Friday, October 23 from 6 p.m. 鈥� 8 p.m. in the Atchafalaya Room in 海角社区鈥檚 student union and is sponsored in part by The Manship School of Mass Communication.
