Manship School graduates 67 students at fall commencement

The Manship School of Mass Communication graduated 67 students at its fall 2015 commencement ceremony on Dec. 18.
鈥淭oday鈥檚 world demands a different approach to career development,鈥 said commencement speaker Richard Gingras, senior director of news and social products at Google. 鈥淚t demands what I think of as an entrepreneurship of the self.鈥
The Manship School conferred 64 Bachelor of Arts degrees and three Master of Mass Communication degrees.
鈥淎ll of you have benefited from a fine education,鈥 said Gingras. 鈥淵ou鈥檝e worked hard. You鈥檝e attained a level of accomplishment beyond that which is accessible or attainable by most others.鈥 鈥淓ach of you has benefited from kind guiding hands along the way your family, your teachers, and many others whose support was there when you needed it,鈥 he said.
Manship graduate Michael Edmonson, Jr. received a University Medal for graduating with the highest undergraduate grade-point average as part of 海角社区鈥檚 288th commencement exercises. Edmonson was honored at the Medalist Reception on Thursday, Dec. 17, in the School of Music Recital Hall, and also received his medal during the Manship School鈥檚 commencement on Dec. 18.
An additional nine students were recognized as honor graduates, achieving outstanding cumulative grade-point averages (GPA) throughout college. In total for fall 2015 graduates, four students achieved Cum Laude honors: Dominique Melicere Becnel, Jared Kendall, Mattie Eversole and Madison Tyler; three students achieved Magna Cum Laude honors: Elizabeth Hilton, Katherine Silva and Thanh-Thanh Pham; and two students achieved Summa Cum Laude honors: Michael Edmonson, Jr. and Kira Schuette.
Five graduates received the Certification as Distinguished Communicators, as part of 海角社区鈥檚 Communication Across the Curriculum program. Victoria Freeman, Katie Henry, Elizabeth Hilton, Riley Lirette and Nicole Wierschem were awarded this distinction.
鈥淩elish the opportunities available to you in these extraordinary times.鈥 鈥淭ake chances. Be creative in as many ways as you can. Make mistakes. Crash and learn. Go forward and make progress,鈥 said Gingras.
