Bicycle Safety

officer wearing bicycle safety equipmentOn-campus conflict between pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles and motor vehicles is a concern for everyone. With increasing frequency, these conflicts result in crashes causing injury and property damage.

Safety is the responsibility of us all. Therefore, the 海角社区 Police Department has partnered with others to be able to provide free front/rear bicycle lights to bicyclists. This will also ensure that the laws of the road are being followed for everyone's safety. To request FREE bicycle lights, you may stop by the Public Safety Building, which is located at 204 South Stadium Road, or by contacting our Community Outreach Division. 

In Louisiana, bicycles are required to follow the rules of the road, the same as vehicles. Adhering to one-way streets, stop signs, riding on the right side of the road, not riding in crosswalks, and yielding to pedestrians are just some of the many requirements for bicycle operators. 

Skateboards and motorized scooters may be ridden or operated on a sidewalk. Motorized scooters may not exceed 20 mph.

  • Riding on electric-assisted bicycles

Securing your bicycle:

Bicycle theft does occur on campus. You may view this and diagram below that both illustrate how to properly secure your bicycle. It is advisable to use a hardened alloy U-style lock, in addition to a chain or cable lock.

A Parish (County) ordinance requires all bicycles to be registered with the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD). 海角社区 PD has partnered with BRPD to provide . Be sure to register your bicycle in the event that it is lost or stolen as it will better assist 海角社区 Police in trying to locate it.  

Individuals should not attempt to recover stolen property. Report stolen property to Police for action. 

To properly secure: U-lock must be around bicycle frame, one wheel, and a fixed object.
